EST Frontier Slovakia will take you on a traditional folklore excursion throughout the regions, visiting open-air village museums where centruies-old churches and pheasant houses have been re-assembled, preserved and furnished with original artifacts reflecting architectural traditions from region to region. You will step back in time and learn about the simple way of life of our ancestors.
Most traditions are preserved to this day, among them is traditional folk music and dance. There are over 200 musical instruments used playing Slovak folk music, but one of them, called “Fujara” is truly unique. This overtone flute can be over 1.5 meters (5 feet) long and dates back to 13th century. Traditionally, the Fujara was played by shepherds, but today it can be found on stages of folk festival throughout the country. The Fujara was proclaimed in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
The largest folk festivals and festivals of folk craft start at the end of June. Most of the festivals are organized under CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals). Every folk festival is unique and has its own atmosphere and magic.
